Rick Astley wouldn’t be worth speaking a word about these days if it were not for the Rick Roll. The Rick Roll was an annoying unfunny internet meme resulting from office workers sending other people links to his video Never Gonna Give You Up that would automatically start when loading a page. It would result in people getting “Rick Rolled” and their co-workers hearing his song much to their surprise.
Getting Rick Rolled would cause a moment of embarrassment for people in traditional office settings, but due to the safe for work nature of the song old people considered it a good joke to play on their friends and emailed it on to others. This spread of the Rick Roll documented the sick depravity of corporate America where people were so desperate for a joke that couldn’t offend anyone that they would pass it on knowing that the worst response it could get would be complete silence with some head shakes, co-worker saying that they didn’t get it, or the boss asking politely that it be turned off.
If you don’t see how depraved the Rick Roll was then you probably work in an office where you are terrified of speaking the truth because doing so might get you fired. If you are one of America’s millions oppressed office workers our hearts go out to you for having bosses who probably should have been called dumbasses a long time ago for employing people so pathetic that they would entertain the Rick Roll.
