It was released shortly after Magic Johnson was diagnosed with HIV and retired from basketball.

Rent the Movie (2005)

The 2005 movie version of the award winning Broadway musical musical Rent starring Rosario Dawson, Adam Pascal, and Anthony Rapp as a group of friends in the East Village section of New York City during the late 1980's and early 1990's affected by the still new AIDS virus. The cast consists of a HIV positive drag queen, musician, and former junkie along with professional people including a landlord, lawyer, and computer genius. The film is rumored to be full of singing as if you were actually watching the play in your living room. Rent the musical and its song 525,600 minutes inspired the musical "Lease" and its song "Everyone Has AIDS" in the 2004 war on terror puppet comedy Team America World Police. The East Village section of New York City can be explored in Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA IV) where it is known as Easton, Algonquin.

The 1995 movie KIDS starring Leo Fitzpatrick as Telly, a hard drinking, pot smoking, drug using, and promiscuous teenager. As the opening seen makes obvious Telly is a successful conquer of teenage girls and has one goal in life, to take the virginity of as many girls as possible. The problem with his objective is that unbeknown to him he is a carrier of the HIV Virus. A fact that comes to light when Jennie (Chloe Sevigny) goes to the STD clinic not because she think she might have something, but to support her slutty friend Ruby played by a young Rosario Dawson (Sin City, Clerks II) who despite have been with more guys then she can remember tests negative for all STDs. Unfortunately Jennie who has only had sex with Telly tests positive for the HIV virus. Jennie sets out to locate Telly and tell him about her HIV status before he can infect others. Directed by Larry Clark this film was hailed by critics as a “wake up call” for safe sex education in the mid 1990’s.
